Pet owners reminded to check your chip

You'd go to the ends of the earth to bring Fido home, right? Turns out, you might just need to go to the vet.

ST. LOUIS — One in three pets will get lost in their lifetime, but dogs are about twice as likely to make their way back home if they have updated microchips--and cats are about 38 times as likely.

That's why from Aug. 13 to Aug. 17 the Humane Society of Missouri will provide microchips at a discounted rate of $25 at all of their vet clinics. Just call (314) 951-1534 to set up an appointment at the St. Louis City, Maryland Heights or Chesterfield locations.

It's also a good reminder to update your pet's microchip information if you've moved or changed phone numbers since you adopted your pet. Often, dogs and cats wind up in the shelter because their microchips are outdated when they arrive. Volunteers and staff can't reach their pet parents.

For more information on microchipping, visit the St. Louis Lost Pet site, stllostpets.org.
