A downtown St. Louis carriage service was ordered to stop giving rides after allegations of unlicensed drivers and endangered horses Thursday.

Brookdale Farms is one of two companies providing horse carriage rides in St. Louis.

A cease and desist order from the Metropolitan Taxicab Commission issued Thursday said the company must stop operating, effective immediately.

The commission claims the carriage company used unlicensed drivers on three separate occasions in early August.

There are also claims that the carriages have been operating on days where the temperature exceeded the 100 degrees.

A hearing was held Wednesday, and the immediate ban was handed down afterward.

If the claims are substantiated, Brookedale could face fines and other penalties in St. Louis Municipal Court.

A call to Jerry Kirk, owner of Brookdale farms, was unanswered. A representative from the taxi cab commission declined to comment, indicating they expect the ban to be litigated shortly.
