This Metro East Walmart is closing next month

A Walmart spokesperson said the decision was not made lightly.

CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill — A Walmart store in the Metro East is scheduled to close, according to signage posted Tuesday.

Walmart at 1511 Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia is slated to close its doors on April 21.

A spokesperson told 5 On Your Side there were a variety of factors behind the closure, and the company carefully weighed the decision. It was an "underperforming" location.

Cahokia Heights Mayor Curtis McCall, Sr. lamented the decision.

"This news is devastating to a community like ours, one that is dedicated to improving stability and providing necessary services for our residents," the mayor said.

All employees of the store are able to transfer to a nearby store and stay with the Walmart company.

The nearest Walmart location on the Missouri side is 12 miles away at Interstate 255 and Telegraph Road, near Jefferson Barracks.

On the Illinois side, there is another store in O'Fallon, 15.5 miles away. There are farther stores in Waterloo and Belleville, too.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Cahokia location," Senior Manager of Walmart Media Relations Robert Arrieta said in an emailed statement. "We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com.”

McCall said he hopes Walmart can still "contribute to the community" with the help of federal or state elected officials.
