ST. LOUIS — A former Vashon High School standout athlete died on Tuesday from his injuries in a north city hit and run.

Police are still looking for the person who was driving the car that left the scene of the crash.

The car, a 2019 Dodge Challenger, was trying to pass the car driven by Derrick Mitchell Jr. and that’s when it clipped the rear left of Mitchell Jr’s car, which caused it to spin out of control. The car driven by Mitchell Jr. then entered the southbound lanes and was T-boned by another car.

Police have not provided any other details about the car they're looking for.

The crash happened on Oct. 4 near N. Broadway and Christian Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Mitchell Jr. was transported to a hospital in critical condition. His vitals were unstable at the time, police said. He was pronounced dead on Oct. 8. A 30-year-old woman was also transported to a hospital and was listed in critical condition on Oct. 4.

Mitchell Jr. was a standout athlete at Vashon High School and then played football at the University of Iowa. He also played at Texas Tech one year.
