WELLSTON, Mo. - A man is facing charges after a police said he threw an explosive out of a moving car while police were trying to carry out a traffic stop.

Chief Tim Swope of the North County Police Cooperative said officers were monitoring what they believed to be a drug deal in the 6100 block of Page in Wellston just before 8 p.m. The officers followed the driver and attempted to pull the car over when the driver threw an explosive device out the window. The device detonated, but no officers were injured.

The alleged driver, 29-year-old Donnie Shepard, was taken into custody Wednesday on felony drug and weapon charges. Additional charges related to the explosion incident are pending due to pending lab analysis.

On Tuesday night, police said he was wanted on charges of first-degree assault against a law enforcement officer Tuesday night.

The investigation is ongoing.
