Second suspect in Officer Langsdorf's death arrested, charged

Kawyn Smith was charged with second-degree murder because Langsdorf was killed as a result of Smith and Meeks attempting to commit a class-D felony of stealing.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — The man who police said gave bad checks to Bonette Meeks — the man accused of shooting and killing Officer Michael Langsdorf — was charged with second-degree murder Tuesday.

Kawyn Smith, 58, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder after police said he gave Meeks two bad checks and rode with him to the food market where Langsdorf was shot and killed.

Charging documents said the checks were not made out to Smith or Meeks, but Smith had Meeks try to cash them anyway.

Police were called after Meeks tried to cash the checks. Officer Langsdorf responded and after a struggle, police said Meeks shot and killed him.

Smith was charged with second-degree murder because Langsdorf was killed as a result of Smith and Meeks attempting to commit a class-D felony of stealing.

Smith turned himself in on Tuesday night at around 7:45. He is being held without bound.

Meeks remains in jail at the St. Louis County Justice Center with no chance for bond.
