Suspect charged in shooting of officer

A Hillsdale Police Officer was injured in a shooting in the 6200 block of Bailey Place around 12:30 Sunday night.

Jared Williams, 24, is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, interfering with a felony arrest, and endangering the welfare of a child.

A Hillsdale Police Officer was injured in a shooting in the 6200 block of Bailey Place around 12:30 Sunday night.

Police say an officer with the Hillsdale Police Department was attempting to arrest 24-year-old Jared Williams, when Williams pulled out a gun and fired shots at the officer, striking the officer twice. The officer returned fire and shot Williams when he attempted to flee the scene on foot.

Williams abandoned an infant when he fled the scene. The child was uninjured and released to family members. Williams was taken into custody shortly after and his weapon was recovered at the scene.

The officer, who has 26 years of law enforcement experience, was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital where with non life threatening injuries.

Williams is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, interfering with a felony arrest, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The St. Louis County Police Department's Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is investigating this shooting.
