Police said a man who was selling his car on Craigslist had the car stolen Sunday afternoon in Edwardsville, Ill.
According to a press release from the Madison County Sheriff's Office, the victim told police he arranged to meet with a stranger on the parking lot of a rural Edwardsville business at around 1:45 p.m. The victim said a man and woman arrived in what he believed was a black Mustang to look at the car.
When 22-year-old Calvin Fletcher Jr. got into the car — a silver 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo with an after-market sound system — he pointed a gun at the victim and told him to get out of the car. The victim slapped the gun — which was pointed at his face — causing the gun to fire. No one was hit, but the victim got out of the car and Fletcher sped off.
The victim got into a car with his friend who was parked nearby, and they tried to catch up with his stolen car. While giving chase Illinois Route 159, Buchta Road and then southbound Interstate 255, the victim called police.
As the chase went westbound onto Interstate 55/70, Fairmont City Police attempted to stop the stolen car. Fletcher continued to flee at speeds of more than 100 mph, at which time police gave up the chase.
Thanks to input from the public, police were able to identify the suspect and recover the victim's vehicle. Fletcher has been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated discharge of a firearm and armed robbery. He has been captured and is in police custody.
