Uber driver uses pocket knife, translator app to demand money from rider who left phone in van

Police said attempts to reach the Uber driver were unsuccessful.

ST. LOUIS – An investigation is underway after an Uber driver demanded more money from a rider who left his phone in the car.

According to police, a 28-year-old man met up with the Uber driver, a 41-year-old man, to get his phone early Sunday morning. Once he got there, the driver displayed a pocket knife over his head and demanded more money using a translator application.

The victim gave him more money. The suspect returned to his Odyssey van and drove off.

Police said attempts to reach the Uber driver were unsuccessful.

The incident occurred in the 4900 block of Potomac Avenue.

Statement from Uber

"The behavior reported is unacceptable and has no place anywhere. We have spoken to the rider to check on their well being and have removed the driver's access to the platform."
