ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Shot while driving down the highway.
That's what happened to a woman who is clinging to life after police say she was shot while riding in the passenger side of a car on westbound I-270 between 367 and Halls Ferry. It happened Saturday night around 8 p.m.
The victim, 31-year-old Brandi Zamora, was transported to an area hospital where she died from her injuries Tuesday evening.
Zamora's friends told 5 On Your Side they believed the shooting was the result of road rage.
"Two pretty innocent girls driving the highway, coming home from Walmart. They went Christmas shopping," said Kathy Arbini, a friend of the victim. Arbini met the victim through Missouri Network- a group that helps those struggling with addiction.
"She was just getting on her feet after having a rough time and she finally got an apartment. she was so proud of herself," said Arbini.
Arbini said the victim and a friend were driving down the road when a silver car began to follow them.
"There was someone behind them that was getting too close to them. When they got next to her, she looked over and she said she could tell he was African-American and had dreadlocks. And that was all they remember. He shot and hit their car four times," said Arbini.
Wednesday, the Major Case Squad announced they were investigating the incident as a homicide. Police are still looking for that silver, four-car door.
"We do need someone to come forward who saw something. Because it's just not fair. It's just not fair," said Arbini.
