Illinois native Melissa McCarthy to receive honorary doctorate from SIU

McCarthy is best known for her roles in “Gilmore Girls,” “Bridesmaids” and “Mike and Molly.”

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Actress Melissa McCarthy is set to receive an honorary doctorate of performing arts at the 2019 commencement for Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

According to a press release, McCarthy is a native of Plainfield and her journey started at SIU as a fashion design major in 1988.

She left SIU for New York after two years to further her fashion studies and perform stand-up.

Her husband, Ben Falcone, is a native of Carbondale. They didn’t meet there, however, they met years later while performing at the Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles.

McCarthy is best known for her roles in “Gilmore Girls,” “Bridesmaids” and “Mike and Molly.” She also has her own clothing line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7.

She will receive the honorary doctorate on May 11 at the commencement celebration.
