If you have to drive in the snow, here are some tips to stay safe

“You gotta prepare to get stuck."

ST. LOUIS — We're not expecting as much snow as last weekend, but that doesn't mean the roads will be less dangerous.

This time around, wind-driven snow could cause near-blizzard conditions on our streets.

Rico Williams, owner of Savedriver Services, said that will make visibility a big problem.

"We'll see the snow drifts and things like that, so you can get yourself in a dangerous situation,” he said.

With strong gusts, it may be hard to see the car in front of you or even the lines of the lane.

That's why he said we have to increase our following distance and slow down.

"You're going to probably drive at a snail's pace,” he said.

Williams said keep your headlights on to make sure other drivers can see you, but don't use your brights.

“If you turn on your high beams, that's just going to reflect more into your eyes and you won't be able to see,” he said.

He said it's best to be ready for the worst.

“You gotta’ prepare to get stuck, so that means you should have a blanket in your trunk, a snow shovel, maybe a bag of sand or something for the weight,” he said.

That doesn't sound like any fun, so Williams recommends staying off the roads all together if you can.

“I believe in being proactive, you know, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” he said.
