Keeping snow on your car isn't illegal in Missouri, but it could cost you money

It's technically not illegal — leaving loose snow on your car — but it could still cost you money.

ST. LOUIS —

We've all been there. You spend lots of time and energy digging your car out of the snow, and the last thing you want to do is brush off the rest of the snow on your car.

It's technically not illegal — leaving loose snow on your car — but it could still cost you money.

They also say, if you're in a wreck with snow on your vehicle, you could be considered at fault.

If loose snow causes someone else to crash, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol, you could be the one footing the bill.

Our own Jenn Sullivan has a whole new perspective on this issue.

Her windshield nearly shattered Tuesday when a giant chunk of ice flew off another vehicle that was on I-64.

Thankfully she's OK but knows it could have been so much worse.

And that diver wasn't the only culprit.

5 On Your Side drove all around St. Louis, both on city streets and on the interstate, and found numerous examples of snow-covered cars.

We ended up following a mini-van for several miles on I-70 West. It's hard to tell in the video that we shot, but several chunks of ice and snow dislodged, nearly striking our car.

Evidently, you all noticed it too.

A photo posted to Facebook shows a Wentzville School bus that was still covered in snow, driving around Tuesday morning.

We went out to the Wentzville bus yard and found dozens of buses were still covered in snow.

A spokesperson for the school district tells 5 On Your Side the transportation department simply didn't have time to clean all of the buses before they hit the road this week.

They say they are working on it, but haven't figured out a quick way to get all of the buses "road ready" for picking up students.
