NORTHWOODS, Mo. — St. Louis County police have reclassified an accidental shooting to a homicide.

On March 18, a 12-year-old girl was found fatally shot inside a Northwoods home.

“As the investigation has progressed, the incident has been reclassified to a homicide,” a St. Louis County Police Department spokesperson said in an email Friday morning.

Police said the girl’s 15-year-old brother was handling the firearm when it was accidentally discharged and hit her. 

Officers from the Northwoods Police Department responded to the home on the 6700 block of Charlie Dooley Drive around 2:30 a.m. on March 18. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 15-year-old has been referred to St. Louis County Family Courts for involuntary manslaughter.

Police said that one adult was in the home at the time of the shooting.
