City to demolish hundreds of vacant buildings

Wild animals and drug dealers, those are just just two of the problems neighbors say they have to deal with because of a large, vacant home in their north city neighborhood.

Wild animals and drug dealers, those are just just two of the problems neighbors say they have to deal with because of a large, vacant home in their north city neighborhood.

The home is located near the intersection of Dryden and Carter Avenues in north city. The city took over the property in October of 2012 after the owner hadn't paid taxes on it for at least three years.

City officials say the house is on the list to be demolished by the end of the year. The city is partnering with MSD to remove some of the worst blighted buildings in the city.

City spokesperson Maggie Crane says thanks to this partnership, the city will be able to more than double its annual spending and target about 1,600 of the worst buildings in neighborhoods.

The process will begin in September. Residents are encouraged to call the Citizens' Service Bureau or their alderman if they have a complaint about a vacant home.
