69-year-old man lifeguards in St. Peters to stay active

"It teaches them responsibility. It gives them a sense of purpose."

ST. PETERS, Mo. — Many pools in the St. Louis area are facing a lifeguard shortage.

In St. Peters, they're hiring seniors to help plug openings.

Ed Eubanks, 69, is the city's oldest lifeguard. Every morning he gets up at 3 a.m. to work out. By, 430 a.m. he said he's at the Rec Plex ready to clock in for work. Eubanks said he watches over the indoor pools four days a week for 7 hours a day.

“I think we need to be moving constantly and this gives me an opportunity to do that," said Eubanks.

The Rec Plex also has younger lifeguards as well. Eubanks said he too was a lifeguard when he was in high school and college and wants to see more teens apply.

“It teaches them responsibility. It gives them a sense of purpose. As well as they’re earning an income while they’re doing it," said Eubanks.

If you want to be a lifeguard, the city of St. Peters is currently looking to hire people.
