The St. Louis Airport Commission voted Wednesday to change the name of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport to put St. Louis first.

The commission — which initially proposed the name "St. Louis International Airport at Lambert Field" — settled on "St. Louis-Lambert International Airport" after discussing the name change with relatives of the airport's legacy founder Albert Bond Lambert.

The change aligns the airport with the overwhelming majority of major airports in the U.S. which are geographically named, a press release from the airport said Wednesday.

The change must now be approved by the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.
