ST. LOUIS BUSINESS JOURNAL -- Reference librarian A.J. Robinson uses MetroLink to commute to a job at Washington University.
Those rides have been lonely lately.
“The only times I’ve really seen it full has been when there’s a sports game or some big festival,” Robinson said.
It’s not Robinson’s imagination.
Metro ridership, including MetroLink, MetroBus and Call-A-Ride, is plummeting — down nearly 20 percent from fiscal 2012 to fiscal 2018, when the system counted 37.8 million rides, according to figures from Bi-State Development, which runs Metro. Rides counted fell off a whopping 7.8 percent last year alone.
MetroLink has lost 3.9 million annual rides since fiscal 2014, when it counted 17.5 million boardings.
