ST. LOUIS — New York may be a port city, but its sailors earn less than those in St. Louis.

Sailors in the Midwest? Yes, the few sailors and marine oilers who operate here on the Mississippi earn an average $63,420 a year, compared with $47,170 for the same profession in NYC. St. Louis has an estimated 180 sailors and marine oilers, compared with 1,540 in New York City.

For most jobs, you'd expect New Yorkers to earn more than St. Louisans. Costs of living are much higher in New York City, and the area's $62,870 average salary is 21.8 percent higher than in St. Louis. For the most part, NYC jobs do pay more than their St. Louis counterparts, but there are some exceptions. According to National Bureau of Labor Statistics data compiled by American City Business Journals, 23 jobs pay at least 10 percent more in St. Louis than they do in New York City.

Among them are psychiatrists (12.4 percent more), library technicians (16.7 percent more) and college health specialties teachers (23.7 percent more). The majority, though, are trades related to construction or machine operating. These types of professions, which include cutting and slicing machine operators, boilermakers and carpet installers, account for 69.6 percent of the 23 jobs that pay more locally. St. Louis' booming construction industry could be a factor in the higher wages.
