The push for a national park in the Metro East just got a major boost.

New funding was just announced for the Cahokia Mounds project.

The Collinsville landmark is the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. As many as 20,000 people lived there in its heyday, around 1100 A.D.

This week, the St. Clair County Board approved a $25,000 contribution to a lobbyist group working to have Cahokia Mounds designated as a national park.

Senator Dick Durbin has also asked President Obama to approve the change.
