NEW ATHENS, Ill. – A huge fire in New Athens caught the attention of a lot of people Saturday.
The fire was at 'Old Shamrock', an 80-year-old building that has been a popular dance hall and tavern. The Old Shamrock has hosted weddings and community events throughout the years.
The owner had planned to demolish it but agreed to let local fire departments burn it as a training exercise instead.
