Jefferson County family fighting against possible sand mine

"Your water could just disappear. One day be there and the next day, gone."

JEFFERSON CO., Mo. – Some call it progress, others call it a huge problem.

A new, industrial sand mine is being planned near Hillsboro in Jefferson County. But one family said it’s fighting the plan to save its history.

Wind chimes are one of the only things you can hear from Leland and JoAnn Enloe's front porch.

“It's tranquil,” said Leland.

The Enloes hope to keep it that way. Joann's family has owned hundreds of acres along Tishomingo Road since 1876.

“My grandchildren are the sixth generation. This is heritage land for us,” she said.

But the Enloes fear their quiet family land could soon sound more like an industrial hub, with large trucks rolling by regularly.

Plans are in the works to turn more than 300 acres across from the Enloes into an industrial sand mine. Nearby residents got word two weeks ago and JoAnn’s family has been gathering signatures opposing the plan ever since.

“Why would we need that in this residential, agricultural area?” she wondered.

Supporters said the mine could bring jobs and development to the county. But Leland feels the benefit would be outweighed by the downside of a mine in there are.

Jefferson County officials declined to comment on the idea until after a Planning and Zoning hearing scheduled for June 14.

The Enloes said the noise from the mine would be an inconvenience. Potential blasting and drilling on the land could shake the foundations of nearby homes. And with each property relying on wells, the even bigger concern is for the underground water table.

“Your water could just disappear. One day be there and the next day, gone,” said Leland. “Or it could be contaminated.”

The Enloes aren't sure what the future holds. But they plan to stand firm as they learn more about their potential new neighbor.

People opposed to the plan will gather for a community meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday at Trattoria Giuseppe in Imperial. Anyone with questions or concerns is welcome to attend.
