'Kids Against Hunger' help feed special needs kids in Haiti

ST. PETERS, Mo. – A group of volunteers in St. Peters spent most of their morning preparing to help children in Haiti.

Kids Against Hunger is a national organization but a satellite group in St. Peters helped supply thousands of meals for a new special needs school in Haiti.

Toni Wagner and her family were some of the volunteers and they said giving back is often just as rewarding for the givers as it is for those receiving.

"It's the best feeling in the world it really is,” Wagner said.

For the past two years she and her family have volunteered to help Kids Against Hunger. On Saturday, they helped package thousands of meals for the cause.

"It's a lot of fun, you meet different people. I think we packaged 25,000 bags," Wagner said.

Dan Vincent is one of the organizers he said the event brought out more than 200 volunteers.

"We had 10 assembly lines set up and with 10 people per line we gave the opportunity for a hundred people to get on an assembly line and pack,” Vincent said.

It happened in the center of Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters Saturday morning, and by the end of the shift they managed to package 50,000 nutritious meals.

"It's just a standard rice, fortified soy, vitamins, and dehydrated vegetables. This mixture is a highly fortified food that's designed for somebody who's malnourished, so we work primarily in Haiti and malnourishment is an epidemic down there," Vincent said.

And although it’s almost tradition for the Wagner family to give back, it doesn't take away from the significance it brings their family.

“There is never a better feeling that to help somebody else, especially if they are starving,” Wagner said.
