MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — A Maryland Heights police officer was shot early Thursday morning and two people have been taken into custody.

The shooting happened just before 4 a.m. at the Pavilion Apartments on Summerhouse Drive.

Police said two officers were out on patrol in the area when they saw someone who appeared to be breaking into a car. 

Police approached the suspect and that's when the suspect fired shots at the officers, hitting one of the them twice in the leg.

The suspect fled the area and tried to get away in another person's car. Both the suspect and the driver were taken into custody.

Multiple police departments were on the scene assisting.

The 38-year-old officer was taken to the hospital and the police chief said he is doing "remarkably well" and is expected to make a full recovery.

He has been with the department for nine years.
