ST. LOUIS – The heat isn't stopping some Muny "super fans" from carrying on a tradition.
A lot of people think it sounds a little ludicrous to stand in the sun if you don’t have to, but one family said with cool drinks and a few tools they've been surviving these high temperatures to get free prizes for decades.
With temperatures feeling like they've reached more than 100 degrees, most people dream of sitting inside with air conditioning. But Amy Scheve and her family said braving the heat has never been a problem, especially when its spent waiting for free tickets at the Muny.
"My family has been coming since the Muny first opened, one hundred years ago this year," Scheve said.
Scheve said it takes a lot to try and keep cool while waiting in line during extremely hot temperatures, but no matter what the temperatures are Scheve and her family said they will never break this tradition.
"We make sure that we have our sun tan lotion because the sun can certainly get to you, we have our umbrellas, sometimes we bring our fans. Muny is like absolutely a favorite, I come and I get autographs, I'll put some mementos in it," Scheve said.
Some would consider her a super fan but it’s a term she’s grown to love and appreciate considering her mother Diana Scheve was the same way.
"It’s not so bad, we’ve been here when it’s over a hundred. The best change though has been the fans can stay on during the entire show now," Diana said.
And any new additions to the Scheve family are expected to learn to love this tradition as well.
“Is there any choice? Not in our family there's no choice, you come,” Diana said.
Anyone who’s brave enough to stand in the heat the Muny offers free seats to shows on a first come first serve basis. The gates to the free seats open at 7 p.m. each night.
