Neighbors help rescue woman from burning house in St. Louis

A neighbor was driving by when he noticed an elderly woman yelling for help from the porch of a house that was on fire.

ST. LOUIS — A woman was rescued from a burning home Saturday night by neighbors who heard her mother calling for help.

St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Garon Mosby said that a neighbor was driving down the 2800 block of Thomas Street in St. Louis when he noticed an elderly woman yelling for help from the porch of a house that was on fire. The woman told him that her daughter was still upstairs.

The man ran into the house and found the woman on the second floor, Capt. Mosby said. He helped the woman to the stairs, at which point he and another neighbor, a woman who had also run into the house, helped the woman down the stairs.

The St. Louis Fire Department was dispatched to the four-family residence just before 10 p.m. and found heavy fire in the back of the building.

When firefighters made their way inside, they found the neighbors working to drag the woman to the front door. Firefighters helped get the woman the rest of the way out of the house.

Both the mother and daughter were transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, but are expected to be OK.

The fire was put out and fire investigators were on scene Saturday night. Capt. Mosby said that the fire was suspicious due to multiple fires in the house. Tests are being run to determine what substance may have started the fires.

It was originally thought that fireworks might have been involved, but they have been ruled out.
