1 person, 3 dogs killed in Monday morning fire in Edwardsville, Illinois

Firefighters said the home's construction made it difficult to completely extinguish the fire.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A person was killed in a house fire in Edwardsville, Illinois, Monday morning.

Firefighters and EMS from three different agencies were called to the home on Second Avenue a little after 6 to respond to a one-story house fire. Firefighters were able to control the fire quickly, but the construction of the house made it more challenging to completely extinguish the fire, which took much longer.

One person was in the home at the time of the fire and was killed. He's been identified as 62-year-old Steven King. Firefighters said there were also three dogs inside the house at the time of the fire. They all died as well.

The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal and the Madison County coroner.

A floor collapsed during the fire, but no firefighters were hurt.
