'She's never going to be right again' | Grandmother demands justice for shaken baby

An Illinois woman is demanding justice for her granddaughter, who was abused so badly she went blind.

CARLYLE, Ill. – An Illinois woman is demanding justice for her granddaughter, who was abused so badly she went blind.

The abuse happened in January, but the person responsible is still walking free.

The baby girl, Shyann Ricks, was airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis from Carlyle, Illinois, after she was shaken, Jennie Warren said.

"She's never going to be right again. They’ve taken her life from her,” Warren said.

Warren says the baby was in a coma and still must be fed through a feeding tube after weeks in the hospital.

"I told the baby from the time she was in the coma, ‘Baby, you need to fight. Grandma will fight for you every inch of the way. We will get justice,’" she said.

Carlyle police said they responded to the home in January where Shyann lived with her parents for a call about a 5-month-old infant not breathing.

Police said they do have persons of interest in the case, and they are still investigating.

Warren said she had custody of the little girl after she got out of the hospital, but police said last month the Clinton County Court returned her to her dad.

"I Just don't understand how the court could put her back in the home where this happened,” Warren said.

Shyann's parents wouldn't talk to 5 On Your Side on camera, but they said she is safe at home and she's improving.

The State’s Attorney asks anyone with information about what happened to call Carlyle Police so they can put the person responsible behind bars.
