‘Stronger than the storm,’ Ameren worker goes above and beyond in Puerto Rico

"Her heart is as big as her truck," Ameren said.

PUERTO RICO – Ameren has been in Puerto Rico helping restore power after a devastating hurricane.

Six months after Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico, some residents are still without power. According to Ameren, 14 percent of the island is still without power.

Ameren Missouri worker, Mary Sweeney, spent three weeks on the island to help restore power.

Sweeney started another mission while assisting residents in Puerto Rico.

Sweeney found more than people in need in Puerto Rico, she couldn’t help but want to help homeless and hungry dogs found on the island after the hurricane.

“Her heart is as big as her truck,” Ameren said.

Puerto Rico estimates there are approximately 100,000 stray dogs. Purina Dog Chow heard about Sweeney’s efforts and donated more than 500 pounds of dog chow to Island Dog Rescue of Puerto Rico.
