On Saturday hundreds of volunteers joined together to clean up the historic Greenwood National Cemetery in north St. Louis County.

Greenwood is one of the oldest black cemeteries in St. Louis.

The cemetery is the final resting place of notable people including Harriet Robinson Scott, wife of Dred Scott and musician Milton Sparks as well as numerous military veterans dating back to the American Civil War.

For years the cemetery sat neglected and was overgrown by vegetation.

Saturday’s volunteers helped clear acres of grave sites that had been reclaimed by nature.

Another volunteer day is set for April 2nd.
