'You were most kind to write' | Florissant mom shares special bond with Barbara Bush

Margie wanted someone in Washington, D.C. to understand her struggles. But she didn't reach out to the president, she wrote to Barbara Bush.

FLORISSANT, Mo. – 1992 was a tough year for Margie Price. She was a stay-at-home mom and her husband Bill had been laid off from his job as a sheet metal worker.

“He probably worked six months in four years,” she said.

With three young kids, money was tight. Margie had to go back to work as a secretary.

“We just learned to cut back,” Margie said. “We didn't go on vacations. We didn't get new cars.”

Margie wanted someone in Washington, D.C. to understand her struggles. But, Margie did not reach out to President George H.W. Bush. After all, she didn’t really connect with him.

“I did not vote for him,” she said.

Instead, Margie wrote a letter to Barbara Bush.

“It was like, woman to woman,” Margie said. “I think she had a lot of influence on George and I guess I was thinking I'd write a letter to her and persuade him to do something about the economy.”

Margie Received a letter back. It made her feel a little better.

“I'm sure that she had a secretary that helped her. But, I'd like to think she actually read the letter herself and gave her thoughts,” Margie said.

Twenty-six years later, Margie’s struggles are behind her. But, the letter is a memento of more simple times, and a woman she admired.

“It is special, just that she took the time to write to somebody in Florissant, Missouri,” Margie said. “What a gracious lady and a good mother.”
