Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter is heading to the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain, retroactive to June 29.

Carpenter hasn't started a game since June 25, more than a week ago.

On the season, Carpenter is hitting just .216 with a .325 on base percentage and .381 slugging percentage. He has ten home runs and 28 RBI on the season, and has already struck out 80 times in 326 plate appearances. That's a 24.5% strikeout rate, the highest of his career.

Carpenter famously overcame a slow start last season to finish ninth in the MVP vote with 36 home runs and 81 RBI.

Look for rookie Tommy Edman and Yairo Munoz to fill in while Carpenter is sidelined.

Pitcher John Brebbia is returning from the paternity list to take Carpenter's roster spot.
