LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. — Winfield police saved a roadside memorial cross from floodwaters and returned it to a grateful family on Tuesday.
The cross memorializes Dennis Stevens, who was killed in a crash on Highway 79 in 2014. The Winfield Police Department had been out looking for a different cross when they found the cross.
Stevens' cousin, Frankie Porter, said she thought it would have been washed away by the flood waters, so she was overjoyed that it was saved.
"Our family put that there for a reason. We need that there," said Porter. "It's the last place that he was."
This is not the first time the family's life has been touched by flooding. Porter said that the family's entire home was washed off its foundation during the flood of 1993.
