New push to help East St. Louis HS track stars

Potential titles and scholarships were lost, including those for student-athletes who weren't involved in the fight, so the community came together to help the boys.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Students at East St. Louis High School fought to save their track season this past spring but lost that fight.

A brawl at a previous meet led the district to cancel the rest of the season. Students protested the decision by walking out of class, leading to further deliberation of the decision.

The East St. Louis school board voted to reinstate the team, but the Illinois State Board of Education sided with the East St. Louis Senior High School superintendent and made the final decision to terminate the remainder of the season.

Potential titles and scholarships were lost, including those for student-athletes who weren't involved in the fight, so the community came together to help the boys.

In June, they started the "We Believe In You Community Scholarship" to help the team members affected by the decision to end the season.

On Wednesday, the leaders came together for one final push. If you would like to help, visit the GoFundMe page.
