Poplar Street Bridge lanes to close for nearly a month starting Monday

Crews announced they need to make critical repairs, which will impact traffic going from Missouri into Illinois.

ST. LOUIS — Two lanes of the Poplar Street Bridge will close for nearly a month so crews can make critical repairs to the structure.

IDOT announced Thursday morning that the two right lanes taking I-55/64 drivers from Missouri into Illinois will have to close. Two lanes will remain open.

Construction begins the morning of Monday, June 10.

IDOT crews have been making small repairs and covering their projects with steel plates, but the bridge is at a point where more expansive repairs are needed, which means closing off lanes to drivers.

IDOT expects all lanes will be back open by July 3, just in time for the 4th of July holiday.

After the holiday weekend, the agency anticipates doing more work on the southbound Illinois Route 3 ramp. IDOT will release more details on that project at a later date.

The MLK Bridge remains closed and now there is no projected reopen date. Crews have been working since August 2018 to replace a bridge that leads up to the MLK Bridge on the Illinois side.

IDOT announced Thursday morning the project has been delayed because of a combination of flooding and train traffic, which goes right through the construction area..
