Memorial Day holiday travel expected to jump 50% across Missouri

You can expect the longest travel delays on Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28, right before the holiday weekend

MISSOURI, USA — If you’re thinking of traveling for Memorial Day weekend, you’re not alone.

AAA estimates more than 37 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home, an increase of 60% from last year.

In Missouri, nearly 736,000 people are expected to travel, with around 700,000 of them driving.

You can expect the longest travel delays on Thursday, May 27, and Friday, May 28, right before the holiday weekend.

AAA Travel noted significant recent increases in online traffic and bookings on AAA.com, particularly for hotels and car rentals.

So where is everyone headed?

According to AAA, Orlando and Las Vegas are top Memorial Day destinations for 2021.

Other top destinations include the following:

Road Trips:

  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Orlando, FL
  • Myrtle Beach, SC
  • Denver, CO
  • Nashville, TN

AAA Travel Bookings:

  • Orlando, FL
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Honolulu, HI
  • Anchorage, AK
  • Colorado Springs, CO

Before heading to your destination, AAA urges you to exercise caution while traveling, and that includes following CDC recommendations.

Keep in mind that some local and state travel restrictions may still remain in place. For travelers who are not vaccinated but choose to travel, the CDC recommends that you practice social distancing, wear a mask, wash your hands and get tested before and after travel.

“As more people get the COVID-19 vaccine and consumer confidence grows, Americans are demonstrating a strong desire to travel this Memorial Day,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel. “This pent-up demand will result in a significant increase in Memorial Day travel, which is a strong indicator for summer, though we must all remember to continue taking important safety precautions.”
