Collinsville residents take stock of hail damage

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. – Severe weekend storms dropped large hail across the Metro East. The hail that fell ranged from pea-sized to baseball-sized.

The damage in Collinsville will be costly. Large hail crashed down on cars and homes.

The storm did not last long. Neighbors said it was no more than 15-20 minutes. But, what it left behind was hail that could fill the palm of your hand.

Jay Brombolich said he walked outside after the storm to assess the situation and found dozens of pieces of hail in his front yard.

“That's going to cause some damage,” Brombolich said in a video he took from his cell phone during the height of the storm.

“It’s like you had an aluminum roof and when it was hitting the siding, it was pretty bad,” he explained.

"Oh yeah, look at this dent,” said David Leezy, who showed 5 On Your Side some of the hail damage to the cars at his North Town Auto Body Shop.

“Look at that dent right there,” he said, “See that?”

Leezy said he saw the majority of the damage on the hoods and fenders of the cars. Most of those damaged were uncovered, sitting outside during the storm. On the other hand, some were able to dodge the falling hail.

“I think I got lucky,” said Brombolich as he inspected his truck. “It got deflected," he said.

Thankfully, there was no major damage reported, but Leezy said it's going to be a busy time for auto body shops.
