Development in the tropics does not look likely

There is one area in the western Atlantic that has a low chance to develop this week

NEW ORLEANS — A broad area of low pressure located a couple hundred miles east of the central Bahamas is producing plenty of clouds, but not much rain. There is a slight chance that this system could develop some subtropical features this week as it moves northeast over the next few days. It is forecast to merge with a cold front on Tuesday and then meander over the central Atlantic. It is not a threat to land. NHC is giving this system a low chance to develop.

Elsewhere...the rest of the tropics will stay quiet for the next 5 days

We've had 30 named storms in 2020 which is a record high number for the Atlantic basin. The old record high of 28 named storms was set in 2005.

Of those 30 named storms, there have been 13 hurricanes and six major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. The record for most hurricanes in a season is 15 in 2005, while the record for major hurricanes stands at seven in 2005.
