Maypop offers flowers and coffee in Webster Groves

A unique gathering place called Maypop opened in Webster Groves a little more than a week ago.

Webster Groves, MO — Maypop on Marshall Avenue in Webster Groves is part cafe, part garden center.

"We wanted to bring in a wider audience to buying plants. We decided we wanted to have a garden center but wanted to have a food element and drink element," said Laura Caldie, Director of Marketing and Outreach.

Right now, you can buy plants but you'll have to wait to buy food and drinks for another week or so.

"All people like plants but not everyone knows they like plants so sometimes you have a gateway entry. Some people start gardening because they love food, some people start gardening and move into the foodie side of things," said Laura.

You'll find the coffee shop inside an old house on the property. Coffee will come from Blueprint in St. Louis, food will come from the Living Room in Maplewood, and pastries on the weekends will come from Like Home in Grand Center.

"We thought it would be charming to do coffee shop in the interior of the house and keep it lovely and homey. And then there was a half acre of property that was a blank canvas," she said.

They built a greenhouse, filled it with a lot of plants, pottery, and things to inspire.

"We've also brought in fun macrame, fun hanging planters made by hand," she said.

The name Maypop comes from this plant, a native vine.

Laura said, "It's a beautiful ornamental flower but it also puts on an edible fruit in the fall... the thing that we like to do here is recommend plants that don't only serve one purpose."

With plants and, soon, coffee, there's more than one reason to visit Maypop.
