Man sentenced in corrections officer assault

A St. Peters man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for nearly beating a corrections officer to death in 2015. It was all caught on camera last July and that video was just released Monday.

Brandon Baker, 27, was sentenced to 30 year for first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, second-degree robbery and attempted escape from confinement.

A St. Peters man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for nearly beating a corrections officer to death in 2015. It was all caught on camera last July and that video was just released Monday.

Brandon Baker was 27 and says he was addicted to heroin when he attacked a 68-year-old jail guard and attempted to escape. The video shows Baker draped in a blue blanket dragging the corrections officer into his cell.

The officer was trying to show Baker compassion by giving him the blankets and mat seen in the video, but Baker took the opportunity to use the blanket to attack the officer.

After choking him for close to a minute, Baker dragged the officer into the hall and began hitting him 38 times in the head.

The whole time other inmates were begging him to stop.

At the hearing the prosecutor asked the judge to show Baker the amount of mercy he showed the officer — which was none.

Today in court, Baker apologized to the officer — who has returned to work after missing six months recovering physically and mentally. The officer said he continues to have nightmares of the assault to this day.
