Farragut Elementary faces possible closure—and it's not about grades

It has nothing to do with grades. The recommendation for closure is all about attendance.

ST. LOUIS — There could be one more abandoned school in north St. Louis after a meeting Thursday night.

The St. Louis Public Schools superintendent is expected to make the recommendation to close Farragut Elementary.

It has nothing to do with grades. Farragut is a fully accredited school. The recommendation for closure is all about attendance.

The school in The Ville neighborhood has a 95 percent attendance rate, but the overall number of students is steadily declining.

In 2016, it was placed on a three-year transformation plan. The recommendation for closure comes a year before that plan is set to end.

The school has several community partnerships with Saint Louis University, Washington University and other resources for interactive learning experiences.

The superintendent will make the recommendation to the board of aldermen at a meeting Thursday night. It starts at 6 p.m. at district headquarters at 801 N. 11th Street in downtown. Everyone is invited to attend.

If the recommendation is accepted, Farragut would be the sixth school to close recently in north St. Louis.
