Roads still covered by ice and snow in southeast Missouri

ST. LOUIS — Snow and ice are still a concern on interstates and roads in southeast Missouri—including interstates 55 and 57.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol warned drivers to use extreme caution and slow down. The agency added that drivers all over the state need to be careful because of the dangerously cold temperatures.

“While this region is the biggest concern, overnight refreezing may affect other parts of the state,” MSHP wrote on Facebook.

The winter storm Saturday had a bullseye on the southeastern part of the state, bringing anywhere from 2” to 5” of snow.

The storm left roads slick and dangerous.

As of 8 a.m. Sunday, MSHP responded to:

  • 1,784 calls for service
  • 660 stranded drivers
  • 304 crashes
  • 45 injuries
  • 4 deaths—2 believed to be weather-related

One of the crashes Saturday involved 15 vehicles, including a firetruck that was responding to the scene. The crash on I-55 in Ste. Genevieve shut down the interstate for several hours.
