Man identified in fatal Lake St. Louis police officer-involved shooting during struggle over gun

Police said the incident started as an investigation into shots fired at Boulevard Park.

LAKE ST LOUIS, Mo. — The man who was shot and killed by Lake St. Louis police after a shots fired investigation resulted in a struggle over handguns has been identified late Monday.

A press release from Lake St. Louis Police Chief Christopher DiGiuseppi said the deadly shooting happened Sunday but did not say when. The man who was killed in the incident was identified late Monday as 27-year-old Wesley Ingrim.

DiGiuseppi said the incident started when the department received a call about someone shooting a gun in Boulevard Park. When officers arrived, they found several shell casings and started an investigation.

During the investigation, officers went to the 2400 block of Fox Bridge Court to try to talk to the man suspected of firing shots in the park.

DiGiuseppi said the suspect came out of the house with two guns. Officers tried to get the guns from the man, but the man fought back. DiGiuseppi said the man was trying to fire the gun, so the officer shot him. The man then fired multiple shots.

“The subject came out of the residence with two handguns. One tucked in his belt. As officers approached him, he reached for one of the handguns. A struggle ensued,” DiGiuseppi said.

“Despite being shot, he was on the ground and kept waving the gun at the officers and fighting them. One of the officers fired and wounded the man,” he said.

“We attempted to talk him down, but it didn’t stop him. He fired two bullets which hit a wall on the family’s front porch. We believe the subject suffered from some type of mental illness and I believe we’ve had past contact with him,” DiGiuseppi said.

The officer, who had suffered a minor hand injury, was treated and released from the hospital. The second officer, who shot Ingrim, is now on routine, paid administrative leave. An officer was treated for a minor hand injury and was released from the hospital.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment and then transferred to another hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The St. Charles County Regional Team is now investigating the shooting. No other information has been provided.

The deadly shooting on Foxbridge Court is the second deadly officer-involved shooting in St. Charles County in two days.

A man died Sunday after a shooting involving police in O'Fallon, Missouri, but when asked whether officers or the suspect fired shots, police only said that the scene off of Highway P remains an active investigation.
