Maplewood police officers stuck with needles

During the process of resisting, he kicked multiple officers and two officers were stuck with needles.
Brian Smith of St. Louis is now charged with assault, kidnapping, and resisting arrest.

MAPLEWOOD, Mo. – A man is facing charges after police said he assaulted officers and stuck two of them with needles while they were trying to arrest him.

Last Friday, Maplewood Police were called to a home on Jerome Avenue for an apparent domestic dispute. Police said Brian Smith hit the victim multiple and times using his fists, a television, a mirror, hypodermic needles and other items. The victim barricaded himself in the bathroom for hours while seeking help because Smith would not allow him to leave.

When police arrived, they attempted to arrest Smith, who became combative and failed to comply with police commands. During the process of resisting, he kicked multiple officers and two officers were stuck with needles.

"Obviously there are some health concerns for the officers," Detective John Leclerc said.

Smith, of St. Louis, was charged with assault, kidnapping and resisting arrest. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
