Kirkwood band director resigns after inappropriate conduct

The band director for the Kirkwood School District has resigned.

KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - The band director for the Kirkwood School District has resigned.

A letter sent to parents of students attending school in the district says Jason Rekittke resigned due to "an act of inappropriate conduct with a student, which happened several years ago."

Superintendent Dr. Tom Williams sent the letter, and says they believe this was an isolated incident.

Ginger Casey, a spokesperson for the school district, says Rekittke was hired by the district in 1993. He started at Nipher Middle School, and later started to split his time between Nipher and Kirkwood High School

In 2003 Rekittke was promoted to the head of the district's instrumental music program. Since then, he has worked with students at Kirkwood High School, Nipher, and fifth graders from some of the district's elementary schools.

Dear Kirkwood School District Families,

I am writing this e-mail to announce the resignation of Jason Rekittke, the band director for the Kirkwood School District. The resignation is due to an act of inappropriate conduct with a student, which happened several years ago. We believe this was an isolated incident.

Our first and most important mission is to provide the best education to help our students be successful. However, this cannot be accomplished without a safe and secure learning environment. While we cannot discuss the specifics of any personnel matter, please be assured that we have strict policies prohibiting inappropriate conduct toward students and we take immediate action upon receiving reports of any violation of those policies.

Police say at this time it does not appear any crime has been committed, but urge anyone with information concerning a criminal offense involving a current or former Kirkwood School District employee to call Det. Dave Smith at 314-984-5905.
