Firefighter falls through floor of vacant home in Ferguson

At 1:30 a.m., the Berkeley Fire Department responded to a fire in the vacant house at 208 N. Harvey Avenue.

A firefighter was hurt when she fell through the floor of a house in Ferguson Wednesday morning.

At 1:30 a.m., the Berkeley Fire Department responded to a fire in the vacant house at 208 N. Harvey Avenue. The department was one of at least six agencies that went to the scene to help Ferguson firefighters put out the fire.

The Berkeley firefighter was on the first floor when she took a step back and fell through the floor into the basement. She was rushed to a nearby hospital with burns. She was treated and released from the hospital within a few hours.

The house was significantly damaged in the fire. A neighbor said the vacant house has been trouble on the block for years. Londa told 5 On Your Side people run around the lot shooting at each other and causing “shenanigans.”

“I’m in the middle of it. I’m in the middle, and I don’t like it,” Londa said. “Been a homeowner, paying my taxes, trying to work for a living and have something. I don’t appreciate having abandoned houses just sit here.”

She said the house needs to go.

At this time, fire officials haven’t said what caused the fire.
