As the Cardinals fought their way through a tough West-Coast road trip, Stephen Piscotty left the team to support his mother at the beginning of another fight, a fight with ALS.
"My mom is very strong, and she's going to battle," Piscotty said. "And we're going to be behind her.
Piscotty opened up about the diagnosis in the Cardinals clubhouse Wednesday afternoon. Piscotty will make his return to the Cardinals lineup Wednesday night for the first time since May 25. Despite being out of the lineup, he hasn't missed an inning.
"We watched all the games on the couch," Piscotty said ."She thought it would be a fun, weird idea to have me there watching."
Piscotty said the news made it hard for him to focus on the field, which prompted his decision to leave the team for a little less than a week. He was Manager Mike Matheny made the time away easy on him and his family.
After watching the games with his mom, Piscotty is motivated to return to the team Wednesday night.
"She enjoys watching me play, so I want to give that to her," he said.
The Cardinals will square off with the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday night at 7:15.
