15-year-old found dead in north St. Louis County pond ID'd

A press release from the St. Louis County Police Department said they responded to a shooting call on the 6300 block of Coventry Drive Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived, they found a teenager suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

There are still no suspects in the murder of a 15 year-old boy in north St. Louis County. He was found, fatally shot, near a pond off Coventry Drive Tuesday afternoon. 5 on your side caught up with his family and friends, who shared their thoughts on the tragedy.

“He turned 15 on May 5th. May 5th. He didn’t get a chance to drive a car,” laments Sha McKinnies, aunt of the 15 year-old boy, Trenell Rogers. She says his relatively short life was a hard one. She lived in the apartment across the street from her nephew, and says his parents were rarely around. She had planned to legally adopt him.

“He was actually staying with me, this boy would come in and do chores before anyone would ask him, he was so respectable, he got his grades up, he had dreams. And they were taken, because no one else cared,” McKinnies says.

With little supervision, Trenell’s friends say he got involved with the wrong crowd, and hadn’t been to school in months.

Demarius Edwards says, “It’s just crazy that he’s gone. He was a good kid, he walked around here every day, head up, he didn’t do nothing to nobody, just wanted to get money.”

His aunt adds, “Yes he did dumb things, but he was only living the life that was given to him. He was a child.”

His friends say the loss of Trenell has taught them a valuable lesson: the importance of positive role models. Friends and family plan to hold a candlelight vigil in his honor Thursday evening. The location has yet to be determined.
