An Oktoberfest event that would bring tens of thousands of visitors to downtown St. Louis this fall has been delayed until 2020 to give organizers more time to prepare for higher-than-anticipated crowds.

An Oktoberfest celebration that was expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors to downtown St. Louis this fall will be delayed by a year.

Organizers of the Great North American Oktoberfest on Tuesday said its nonprofit board and contracted event producers decided to delay the inaugural event until Oct. 2-4, 2020, to give them more time to prepare. It had been originally slated to run Oct. 4-6, 2019.

The organizers behind the Taste of St. Louis event have decided to bring the annual food festival back to downtown St. Louis, after being held in Chesterfield for several years. The event will be held in the streets and park adjacent to Soldiers Memorial and City Hall on September 13-15.

"There are many unique items related to this festival that are requiring more planning time than we originally anticipated, and the attendance is projected to be much larger than we originally planned for as well," read a statement on the event's Facebook page. "While we are disappointed we will be unable to produce the event this year, we know it is the right decision to delay in order to ensure we execute a premiere Oktoberfest celebration."
