A fairytale stranger than fiction: Kirkwood novelist inspired by real Royals

"My story might be more traditional than what they royal family's actually gone through."

KIRKWOOD, Mo. — This story is part of a series on Today in St. Louis leading up to the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Tune in each weekday and watch the wedding live on 5 On Your Side on Saturday, May 19.

“There’s something about royalty,” Glynn Young says, flipping through one of his books.

Getting lost in the pages, you might find yourself in England surrounded by a familiar story.

“What I’ve done is basically take an ordinary person and push them into a position they neither expected or trained for—even wanted—but they were basically thrust into it.”

Heard of that one?

“My story might be more traditional than what they royal family’s actually gone through,” he laughs.

He’s inspired by a long-time love of all things British, but Young says our fascination with royalty is universal.

“It’s different than celebrity. I mean, this isn’t a Miley Cyrus or a Kardashian family. This is something that’s much more permanent,” he said. “Much more fundamental to what our understanding is, of people, of countries, of cultures, and even of ourselves in a way.”

It’s a theme that runs through each of his books, but he says sometimes the best stories tell themselves.

“People often say life is stranger than fiction, and in this case it might be,” he said. “I don’t think anyone would have imagined a story like that.”
